Electric Boat teams with Mystic Aquarium in STEM education partnership

Mystic Aquarium is partnering with General Dynamics Electric Boat in a three-year deal that it says will promote STEM education, workforce growth and conservation efforts in Connecticut.

Funding for the initiative comes from the federal Maritime Industrial Base Program, a reserve set aside by Congress last year to strengthen and expand the industrial base that builds and maintains Navy assets, including submarines.

The partnership will include sponsorship from Electric Boat for three college and six high school interns at the Aquarium. The Aquarium will also distribute information about Electric Boat’s youth and adult pathway programs via social media, on its website and in campus digital media.

During Manufacturing Month in October, the Aquarium will host a career expo focusing on the manufacturing of submarines in Connecticut.

The two will also pair for a new exhibit at the Aquarium that will debut in 2026, highlighting both mechanical and electronic interactive elements.

The Aquarium describes the venture as “one of the most significant corporate alliances in Mystic Aquarium’s history,” and says it has taken more than a year of planning and negotiation.

“This collaboration with Electric Boat represents a pivotal moment, not just for our mission, but for the future of the STEM workforce and global conservation efforts,” said Tina Couch, the Aquarium’s chief advancement officer.

Electric Boat has mounted a long-term effort to attract young people into careers at the shipyard, as it embarks on a multi-year expansion, working on both the ongoing Virginia class submarines and the planned Columbia class.
