Bloomfield company that offers adult day care services eyes expansion

CONTRIBUTED Cattleya, a Bloomfield-based service provider for people with intellectual disabilities, is relocating to this office building at 310 West Newberry Road.

A company that operates an adult day care for people with intellectual disabilities received zoning approval from the town of Bloomfield Thursday night for a major expansion.

The organization, Cattleya LLC, currently operates in a 2,200-square-foot building at 222 Wintonbury Ave.

Charmaine Thompson, who co-owns Cattleya, said the organization needs more space.

“I have outgrown my location,” Thompson said. “I have one bathroom for 19 people.”

Catleya submitted an application to the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission, to allow the organization to relocate to about a 10,000-square-foot space in a large office building at 310 West Newberry Road.

The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a special permit to facilitate the move Thursday night.

The new facility will provide ample space for clients to engage in activities and receive job training, such as interview preparation, Thompson said.

“It’s bigger and it has more sections so we can develop more programs for the individuals,” she said.

Cattleya has 54 employees across the Bloomfield location and a second facility in New Britain. The for-profit operator provides services for people with intellectual disabilities, many of whom live at home with their parents or a family member.

Clients stay at the day care while their caregivers are at work, and staff members take them to libraries, movies, parks and engage them in the community.

The town’s zoning approval allows Cattleya to park a fleet of vehicles in the parking lot at 310 West Newberry Road. No more than 10 vehicles may be stored in the lot overnight.

The office building at 310 West Newberry Road spans 34,430 square feet and also houses offices for Cognizant, an IT consulting firm, and RT Specialty, a wholesale distributor of specialty insurance products and services.

The property is owned by Natick, Massachusetts-based Griffin Center Realty LLC, which owns Griffin Center, a prominent office development along Day Hill Corridor in Windsor.

Thompson said Cattleya will leave its existing location at 222 Wintonbury Ave. “as soon as possible.”

Cattleya was formed in 2016 and currently serves northern Connecticut, but plans to expand its service area to include the entire state within two years.

Cattleya said in its project narrative that the needs of people with disabilities are not being met by other programs.
