Farmington-based Otis builds 3 new floor-to-glass elevators for iconic Seattle tower

Farmington-based Otis Worldwide has built a new, floor-to-ceiling glass elevator for Seattle’s iconic Space Needle.

The first of three custom Otis SkyRise sightseeing elevators debuted at the 605-foot tall high-rise structure on Friday.

The elevators – which provide stunning views of Seattle, the Puget Sound and nearby Mount Rainier – will be the first in North America, and only the second in the world, to use Otis' most powerful SkyMotion 800 machines.

Two of the three new elevators have two decks and can move up to 46 passengers each. The third elevator will have one deck.

Their floor-to-ceiling glass windows “immerse visitors in the world around them as they rise 520 feet into the sky in less than 50 seconds,” Otis said in an announcement.

"Otis is proud to be the company that iconic global projects like the Space Needle choose to safely transport visitors to breathtaking views and share once-in-a-lifetime experiences," said Joseph Armas, Otis’ president for the U.S. and Canada.

Otis has a longstanding relationship with the Space Needle and installed the original elevators in 1962, and upgraded them in 1992.

The custom elevator cabs were designed by an aerospace manufacturer and built and assembled by Otis on site.

This elevator upgrade, funded by a $100 million private investment, is part of the Space Needle's Century Project renovation, which started in 2017.
